You may have heard of Mrs. 4d. But who is Mrs. 4d?

Who is this "Mrs. 4d" and how did she get her name?

Mrs. 4d was a dandelion tea, one of the varieties sold in the summer months at the coffee shops in the Chicago area. She is a black tea with a green flower that never opens to bloom, which is why it is called dandelion. Her name came from when she first appeared in the coffee shops. She was a large, robust plant that could have at times threatened the shop owners or their employees.

Tea was considered to be a luxury in the early days and would often sell for pennies a cup at the market. Mr. 4d was one of these owners.

She was the beneficiary of a generous deal with the government, which allowed them to purchase this tea at such high prices. When they realized what a huge profit they could make, they bought enough for everyone and set them free on the streets. They ended up in all kinds of pots, baskets, and other containers. The constant contact with the water caused the leaves to oxidize.

The leaves became black, which attracted many buyers, as they could save huge profits by drying and roasting the leaves to create tea. Some of the customers became known as "flowers". The leaves were still green when they arrived, but over time, their colors changed to black.

They became known as "Mrs. 4d's soup".
